The Sports Announcer Voiceover Niche

Sports announcers, newscasters, and commentators hold a unique place in the world of voiceovers. These voices are needed in smaller quantities (than actual live announcing events) to bring games to life, capture the excitement of play, and connect fans to the action in video content, documentaries, animation, and all forms of media. Sports announcer voiceovers demand energy, tempo, and clarity, with an understanding of the sport, offering up bonus insights. With the FIFA World Cup, Major League Cricket expansion, Olympics, and the general popularity of sports, this has become a great bespoke opportunity to create a sports announcer voiceover niche.

What Makes a Great Sports Announcer Voice

A sports announcer’s voice must do more than describe the action. It needs to engage listeners, build suspense, and convey the atmosphere of the event. Important qualities include:

  • Clarity: Clear pronunciation helps listeners follow fast-paced plays.

  • Energy: A lively tone keeps fans excited and involved.

  • Pacing: Knowing when to speed up or slow down adds drama.

  • Emotion: Expressing joy, tension, or disappointment connects with the audience.

  • Consistency: Maintaining a steady voice throughout long broadcasts avoids listener fatigue.

*On a sidenote, the UK tends to use Broadcaster/Commentator/Presenter verbage while the US uses sports announcer/newscaster/anchor more often.

Skills and Preparation

Some actual professional voice announcers turn their hand to specializing in sport announcing voiceovers. But for voice actors starting out in this area training and preparation plays a big role.

  • Study professionals. Listening to experienced announcers reveals techniques to emulate.

  • Take courses. Voice acting and sports broadcasting classes will improve skills.

  • Record & review. Reviewing your own recordings will identify strengths and weaknesses.

  • Build a demo reel. Record your best commentary samples to showcase your voice.

  • Network. Connect with agents and online streaming platforms to showcase this specialty.

Examples of Iconic British Sports Commentator Voices

Many successful announcers develop a signature style that fans recognize instantly with some voices becoming synonymous with certain sports.

  • Sue Barker Former tennis player that has been covering Wimbledon Tennis for 30 years

  • Murray Walker the legendary voice of Formula One for BBC & ITV

  • Brian Johnston famous for seamlessly blending cricket with lighthearted humor

  • Clare Balding CBE Iconic british voice for Horse racing, tennis, and the Olympic Games

  • Peter Drury Poetic commentary style who has become a fan favorite on Sky Sports

These announcers show how voiceovers in sports can create lasting memories for fans and help you mimic or be inspired by their insightful commentary.

The Sports Voiceover Announcer Niche: My Story

Beyond the original announcer, it is not unusual for content creators to seek a voice talent who can mimic the style (if not the exact impression) of classic sports commentators, and it is here that I have personally found opportunity. There are certain British commentators and styles that I seem to be able to bring to the table, the aforementioned Murray Walker being one. Hear me in the animated short The 1971 Grand Brie, bringing his unique style to the story. Continuing the F1 theme, you can currently hear me as a commentator in this Dell/McLaren spot. I've got a couple of FIFA World Cup football projects running including one celebrating the South African team.

I've been a golf commentator for Morgan Stanley, celebrating their long-standing relationship with Justin Rose. I had a small announcer piece in Netflix Queen of Chess, did an American football promo for Amazon's Monday Night Football and a series of cycling promos for Supersport. Taking the subject in a surreal direction, I was the stadium announcer calling the Nightball match in anime, Dark Moon: The Blood Altar: S1 E8.

It seems ironic that the sport I played at the highest level, cricket, has yet to find its way into my portfolio. However, with the sport rising in popularity in the USA thanks to Major League Cricket and T20 being showcased at the 2028 LA Olympic Games, I'm hoping for there to be more auditions on the horizon in the near future.
